Reactivity & aggression · Ottawa–Gatineau

It lives in context.

BetterDog is the in-home solution for your dog. Front door, hallway, fence, windows, your usual routes. No shock collars. No fear.

30 days of phone, email, and text support included. Further in-person training requires a pass or pay-as-you-go booking.

Luna, at heel. The work holds on the path.

The problem

Does this sound familiar?

  • You turn around the second another leash appears.
  • The door is an event. Every time.
  • Windows, fence, hallway — the dog is on watch.
  • You were sold a collar, a class, a treat. It didn’t hold.

We work dogs who lunge, bark, guard, snap.

Consent-based. Communication. Structure. Stress reduction. Practice on your real Ottawa and Gatineau routes — not a neutral hall where the problem doesn’t exist.

Outside stress

Walks Feel Like a Fight

What's happening

Your dog is scanning, anticipating, and reacting before anything even gets close.

Why it keeps happening

They react, the trigger moves, and their brain logs that as a win.

What we change

We interrupt the reaction and teach your dog to check in instead of explode.

People reactivity

People, Kids, Visitors, or Delivery Triggers

What's happening

Your dog reacts to certain people, certain movement, or certain types of approach.

Why it keeps happening

Your dog has started treating people as a safety problem they need to solve first.

What we change

We lower the pressure, clean up the message, and put security back on your shoulders.

Home stress

Your Dog Owns the House

What's happening

The door, the windows, the hallway — they all kick your dog into security mode.

Why it keeps happening

No clear boundary often becomes open responsibility. Open responsibility creates stress.

What we change

We show your dog they don't need to supervise the whole house anymore.

Guarding pressure

Guarding Space, Stuff, or People

What's happening

Your dog stiffens, blocks, hovers, guards, or gets weird around valued space or things.

Why it keeps happening

They think protecting access is their job — and nobody has convincingly taken that job back.

What we change

We rebuild clearer rules around access, space, and leadership without making the home feel tense.

Family tension

Things Feel Off at Home

What's happening

Snapping, stiffness, touch sensitivity, or tension around movement keeps showing up.

Why it keeps happening

Pressure builds when your dog doesn't trust the structure or predictability around them.

What we change

We create clarity so your dog can stop carrying tension through every small moment.

Higher stakes

This Has Started Getting Serious

What's happening

Growling, snapping, biting, or long recovery time — the nervous system is staying elevated too long.

Why it keeps happening

The behaviour has been rehearsed enough that it now shows up faster and feels bigger.

What we change

We step in early, clearly, and calmly so the pattern finally stops getting rewarded by repetition.

How we actually work it

  1. 01

    Home first

The trigger is already in the house. We start there.

  2. 02

    Then the street

The route you already walk. Not an empty path.

  3. 03

    The manual, same day

We record in audio. A guide that feels like the session, in the app.

What actually holds

The change happens where the problem lives

Kitchen, door, walk. Not a neutral room where none of it actually happens.

One household. Every dog. One fee.

$500 tax-in. No per-head surprise. Everyone who lives with the dog is in the session.

A custom manual for your dog

We record in audio so you can stay focused on the learning. The guide lands the same day in the app.

What Ottawa–Gatineau households say

Public Google reviews. A dog name on this page is not proof the review is about that dog.

All I can say is WOW, I was sceptical of some reviews saying they’ve seen monumental changes in under 24 hours but they are all 100% factual. Jon is very knowledgeable and clear and direct with communication and what needs to be done.

This has got to be the best trainer ive come across, we had Jon for our four dogs, two of which we're highly problematic. He came in super well organized with a plan for each dog already which he can tailor further.
Stephen Hendry
We took our reactive Aussie to BetterDog and by the end of one session he was a model citizen. We were absolutely speechless at the results.

Frequently asked questions

How much does training cost?

The Life Changer Session is $500 tax-in — one household fee, every dog in the house. About three hours in your home. The Unlimited Training Pass is $1,200/year or $125/month on a 12-month commitment, if you want follow-ups and Pack Walks after that first session. No packages to decode.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. Your dog’s world is your kitchen, your door, your street. That’s where we work. Not a studio where none of the real problems exist.

Do you use treats?

Treats are not a crutch and not the lead. We use Emotional Marking: verbal praise, touch, play, and food used strategically — a crate that needs to feel safe, the end of a hard nail trim. Your dog listens because the communication is clear, not because you’re a walking snack.

Who has to attend?

Everyone who regularly lives with the dog. Adults, kids, the sitter, the walker, Grandma if she’s in the rotation. The first session is mandatory for the household. Mixed signals are how training dies.

How long is the first session?

Block three hours. One hour on how dogs think and communicate. Two hours hands-on — we do it, then you do it, until everyone in the house is confident. We record the session in audio, so you can stay focused on the learning. Every question and answer is recorded. The little hints. The tidbits you share — recorded. Then we prepare a comprehensive guide that feels like the session you just had. A custom manual for your dog. Same day. In the BetterDog App.

Can I join Pack Walks?

Not as a drop-in. Pack Walks are for BetterDog members — especially households who’ve been turning around at the sight of another leash. Start with the in-home session. Members on the Unlimited Pass walk free. $60 per walk otherwise.
