After just one introductory session, Nancy sat us down, took us through dog psychology before teaching us practical skills to help take command of our dogs. By the end of the session we were able to get our dogs to calmly go to their "place" and remain there. We strategically planned the session before a gathering — our dogs were the best behaved they've ever been when having people over. Nancy didn't try to convince us to sign up for the year subscription; she was open that just the lessons we learned should get us a good chunk of the way there. I was genuinely surprised and impressed at how much of a difference we saw in our dogs in 24 hours.

Luna's first pack walk with 14 other dogs she'd never seen — she arrived barking from the car and left without barking at all. She just watched. Absolutely amazing.

Jon Wells came to our home and spent hours getting to know Luna and teaching us how dogs think, perceive and act. In less than a week we saw improvements in Luna's confidence, demeanour and her trust in us. Today we took Luna for her first pack walk with 14 other dogs she had never seen before. When we got her out of the car and she saw the other dogs on leash, she stopped barking. She was curious but relaxed and showed no signs of being anxious. Jon and Nancy controlled the pack walk with calmness, experience and some laughter. At the end of the walk when we put Luna in the car, she saw other dogs walking to their cars — she DID NOT bark. She just watched. Absolutely amazing.

Bauer and Esmee, Dachshunds in Manotick — super reactive with constant barking, and sometimes aggressive with dogs and people. Nancy came by and spent time explaining the dogs' psyche, how our behaviour was enabling theirs, and provided us with tools to take back control as the "leader of the pack". It was a relief to see a shift right away and we're hopeful for more progress as we maintain the approach consistently! Nancy was empathetic and supportive.

For weeks our dog had been barking at visitors and showing aggression. Within a few minutes, Jon had our dog nuzzling up to him. Nothing short of amazing.

For weeks we had been concerned about our dog's barking at visitors and apprehension and aggression with them. Within a few minutes, Jon had our dog nuzzling up to him. Nothing short of amazing! We learned so much in our first session and following additional practice we'll have Jon back for the next step.

A 1-year-old Pyrenees/Husky/GSD mix pulling hard and trying to overpower me. After just the introductory session, I saw a huge difference — and my confidence came back too.

Booking the introductory session with Jon has been a real game-changer. I was feeling very difficult taking care of my 1-year-old Pyrenees/Husky/German Shepherd mix — he was pulling the leash a lot, not listening, and trying to overpower me. Jon showcased his expertise in calming my dog, helped with leash pulling and gave me an initial well-explained training. With just the introductory session, I saw a huge difference in my puppy's behaviour which slowly brought back my confidence too.

I was at the brink of rehoming my dog. Jon had Hollie walk 2ft from a stranger with zero reaction, and brought toys back into the home with no fights. For the first time in months — peace.

I called BetterDog after my dogs had gotten into a fight. I was at the brink of making the heartbreaking decision of possibly letting my littlest go to a new home. From my first phone call, Jon was knowledgeable, calm & confident. Today, Jon successfully had Hollie walk 2ft from a stranger with ZERO reaction. He put treats on the ground while having the girls stay apart, with neither of them running in to grab it. We were able to bring toys back into our home and there were NO FIGHTS. For the FIRST time in months, there is a sense of calm, peace & boundaries in my home again.

We had an amazing experience with Jon. He helped us immensely in calming our hyperactive Westies, Charlie and George. By the end of just one introductory session, the dogs were noticeably calmer, walked much better on leash, and were listening far more consistently. Jon is incredibly charismatic, knowledgeable, and easy to communicate with. We also love his online platform, which makes it simple to track progress.

Amazing experience with my new rescue dog… after only 2 hours things had improved significantly. I was out of hope — but this training was just what my big guy needed.

BetterDog helped me set the right tone for raising my puppy. Mistakes were highlighted that I was able to correct, steering little Ozzy in the right direction. After only one session I was able to walk him, when he was about three months old, without having to coax him with treats.

In only 2 sessions — walks are enjoyable and calmer, and my dog now sits on his bed quietly when people enter. Jon and Nancy gave me so much more confidence.

In only 2 sessions — walks are enjoyable and calmer, and my dog now sits on his bed quietly when people enter! I can't thank Jon and Nancy enough for how much more confidence they have given me in handling my dog. Before, walks were stressful with constant pulling and guests were always charged and barked at upon entry.

A Husky/GSD mix with leash pulling, reactivity, prey drive and chaotic energy in a new apartment. We saw a lot of change in just the first visit.

Nancy came to our place in Gatineau to help us with our Husky/GSD mix Gage — he struggles with leash pulling, reactivity, prey drive, and just general chaotic/nervous energy especially in a new apartment environment. Nancy gave us exercises to improve our communication, boundaries, and leadership. We saw a lot of change in just this first visit! The tools and techniques were easy to follow and the results in such a short time were obvious.

When it really matters

Multi-Dog Aggression · Ottawa

"While sitting in the hospital after being bitten breaking up a dog fight, my husband was ready to rehome our second dog. Jon came back over and worked with us until we were confident. Our dogs are best friends again."

The outcome: Two fighting dogs → best friends. Family stayed whole. Results held for 12+ months.
Apartment Barking · Ottawa

"I sat outside my apartment door on a chair for the entire hour and a half and listened. No barking. I couldn't believe it. For the first time I felt there was a light at the end of the tunnel."

The outcome: Constant hallway barking → 90 minutes of silence. Neighbours kept. Year program signed.
Reactive French Bulldog · Ottawa

"My 4-year-old French bulldog Major went from wearing a muzzle when Jon arrived to obeying all commands and letting Jon scratch him. He does not take well to strangers. This was life-changing."

The outcome: Muzzled on arrival → calm, responsive, trusting strangers. One session.

The public review

"The techniques included leash pops or snaps every time our Welshie moved out of a heel position… the type of physical corrections being used did not match my training approach. I want to show my dog what I want him to do in a positive reinforcement manner, not with negative physical corrections. I have no doubt that Jon's techniques have taught dogs to walk properly on a loose leash — I just wish the BetterDog website had made clear that those techniques include leash feedback."

Jon’s reply

"Training style fit really does matter, and we respect your decision to stop when it didn't line up with how you prefer to work with your dog. At BetterDog, we're consent-based and humane, but we're not purely treat-driven. We use clear emotional markers, structure, and at times leash feedback — never hands-on correction — to help dogs settle and stop feeling like they have to manage the walk themselves."

Not every training philosophy is the right fit for every family — and that’s okay. We’d rather be honest about that than hide it.
